Hubert Laws’ second effort for CTI (following the lesser-known Crying Song) made him into a major star in the jazz world. Performing two melodies by Bach, one by Mozart, James Taylor’s “Fire and Rain,” and the theme from Love Story, the flutist plays quite beautifully throughout this classic outing. Don Sebesky’s arrangements perfectly frame Laws’ flute, and the backup group (an enlarged rhythm section plus bassoonist Fred Alston Jr.) includes guitarist Gene Bertoncini, vibraphonist Dave Friedman, and keyboardist Bob James.
